Those who walk past the homeless
78
Homelessness is an open secret we all know it’s there because we see it everyday. Politicians will act as if they care whilst pursuing their own ambition. The silent saints of this world are out there helping to feed and clothe those who have hit the hard times for no reward other than they feed their conscience. There’s never enough money to help charities that try and house the homeless. There’s plenty of cash around to fund military action abroad where the results of such action leave lots of people homeless.
Why is it that people in well paid jobs who were lucky enough to have parents that taught them how to get on in life treat those in less fortunate positions with such contempt? Is it okay to despise the homeless? I find the attitude in the UK to people on the street is pretty saddening. Most people walk by deliberately turning their head away from the tired eyes of a beggar, why turn away surely such an act implies that your conscience is being forced by your heart to ignore a fellow human being.
Why do some people assume that being homeless means you’re worthless? I’ve observed homeless folk from a distance and watched their attempts to acquire money for food. I witnessed people in suits ignore them, women sneering at them and young guys insult them and I’ve never seen a homeless person retaliate to such animosity. What would happen if a homeless guy verbally abused a ‘normal’ person?
I have experienced homelessness myself although I wasn’t hardened to that kind of life and I didn’t spend a long time on the streets but the short time I did woke me up to the crap that those of us out of luck have to put up with. Homeless has a stigma and the general view of society seems to be that being Homeless means;
You’re weak
You’re lazy
You’re a drug addict
You’re an alcoholic
You’re a loser
You sponge off the Govt
Even if any of the above were accurate do people stop to think of the reasons why such terms are slapped on to those who are down in the hole? Isn’t there another way of looking at the homeless in a more positive way?
For example;
They’re human
They have a heart
They are independent
They are resourceful
They are determined
They give a shit about other people
They will share what they have
You see I think homeless people have the moral high ground over those who pass superior judgement upon them because they show a humility and kindness amongst fellow homeless that the selfish wealthy sometimes don’t. One of the rare occasions where I lost my temper was a long time ago when I was in my teens and I was walking along a street about 11pm and I saw an old homeless guy who was probably in his early 70’s sitting on a wall with his hand out hoping someone would maybe drop a coin in it. Before I got to him two guys of a similar age to me walked past and pushed the guy over the wall and laughed as he struggled to get up. I climbed over the wall to help the man up and he was crying and he looked at me with such sad eyes and said ‘is this what my life has come to? I gave him what little cash I had and ran after the two guys and beat them up. I’m not a tough guy by any stretch and I cringe when I think that I resorted to violence but I was young and didn’t posses the reasoning skills that would enable me to humiliate these two thugs with words.
I worked for a charity for awhile helping out at a hostel and the people who were lucky enough to get a room were so grateful and such warm human beings. These were people who had no money yet would always pool what little they had to get birthday presents for each other.
I don’t believe a single man or woman chooses to be homeless. Circumstances conspire against people and once the web of despair is woven it is difficult to get out of the trap. If you have no home you’re unlikely to get a job, if you have no job. You might be entitled to some help from the Government as long as you have a home but if you don’t have accommodation you can’t claim benefits which means you can’t pay rent which means you’re homeless.
Family break ups, tough upbringing, no mentoring or role models, unemployment and misfortune are the kind of things that put people on a path to nowhere. Yet I wonder if any of these unfortunate events are ever considered by those who look down on the homeless?
Isn’t it a ridiculous contradiction that soldiers who fought for their country can be homeless?
What does that say about how politicians and voters view the importance of such misfortune?
Wherever I am will always offer money to a homeless person and I don’t care what they spend it on. I can’t walk past and ignore. I don’t want a medal for such an act I just don’t understand how people can judge someone less fortunate in such a cold way. The beauty of it all is I know there are plenty of people out there who care.
There is no seal between us
The half baked moon
Sat on an overcooked sky
As it watched over this world
With its one lazy eye
The silhouettes and shadows
The coffins and the cute
The tripped up drunken metaphors
Chewing up what is mute
Drifting clouds a weeping
As gravity shows no fear
And the settlers are not sleeping
And nobody is coming near
Homeless isn’t airtight
Lives are never sealed
You can close your eyes all you want
But you will never conceal
A yawning sun
Behind curtains drawn
Slowly waking up
To being born
The silhouettes and shadows
Sow the seeds of knitted flesh
An army of paradox’s
Marching awkward in this mess
The wind is on inspection
Maybe god has sent a ghost
It has no sense of direction
And the guesswork of a host
Who pays the dues of fortune
Who created this moral debt
Whose wolf barks out at the moon
To make it easier to forget
Homeless isn’t airtight
Lives are never sealed
There are no doors for you to shut
Or an axe for you to wield
Life makes up every bed
Not knowing what is fair
If you are homeless in your head
You can be homeless anywhere

Double wow! A strong sense of humanity is alive and well in AR I see. How sad that there are people like this in the world and not only because they have no sense of brotherhood with their fellow man but because they are actually proud of the fact. Sick.
I love your hub Joe. It's a good reminder that anyone of us could, by some misfortune or circumstance, end up homeless. I don't have much experience of older homeless people apart from giving them food and money when I see them (there was an old guy I used to give 50p to everyday on my way home from work) but I do have experience with younger homeless.
The young homeless people I've come into contact with (when I was a youth worker) all had had such shitty lives, that they really NEEDED to run away for their own safety. Mostly they were running from violence or sexual abuse. Then they find themselves in situations on the streets where they are manipulated and abused some more. It's a very hard trap to get out of without some help, especially when all of their life experiences has taught them they are worthless and deserve no better.
Good job!
yes Joe people have different views on this topic....my work brings me in touch with people everyday (families) that are close to the edge...and or have been there. Many of the problems arise because money/resources go into the urgent situations, rather than putting resources into prevention....this is huge topic....lots of breadth I could comment on but not here.
I chuckle when I hear that folks think there are lots of places to sleep....the shelters....people should go visit them....it's an eye opener as you know....and it's all temporary....head in at night and released in the early a.m.....left to wander around and wait for the night again for a roof over your head....while many people ignore you....the families...well they don't go there.....and enough beds for the night?....there are not enough.....and do you want to be there for the night....many don't! and I don't blame them!...so they stay on the street and hide away at night....and hide they do....it's amazing where people hide away....people would be shocked....I've roamed the streets at night to see where people sleep...getting a head count to determine what the real number of homeless folks is....then there are the 'couch surfers'....etc. etc....the true number is never really revealed....because there are so many hidden away...and oh yea, those cheap motels...they are cheap for a reason.....many families live there because there is no where to go.....
my 2 cents this a.m.
Thanks Joe. You put perspective of being human and I'm glad I read your hub.
Hey Joe,
This is a beautiful and thoughtful written article. It is wonderful that you have so much compassion. I am grateful to learn, grow, and associate with people like you.
I live here in the US where we have the same issues. I am not sure where AR lives in the US, but the state I live in does not have plenty of places for the homeless to stay in the dead of winter. Yes, we do have shelters, but there is never enough room for everyone. There are long waiting lines and in many cases, a homeless person is put on a waiting list for an available bed.
I disagree that all the homeless have substance abuse problems as AR implied. Many are young mothers with small children who are trying to escape an abusive relationship. There are also the mentally and physically disabled who cannot afford to pay the high rent and high living expenses from their fixed amount disability checks.
I am not sure after reading A.R's comment, who I feel more sorry for, the homeless or people like him with NO COMPASSION, NO SYMPATHY, or NO UNDERSTANDING of the true meaning of giving and receiving. I say this because any adult knows that we receive exactly or more of what we give.
Howdy Joe - In my work over the years as a medic, I do not recall ever having met a homeless person who was homeless by choice.
Oops - that is not true. I did know one man who left a very high-level job to go live under the bridge. He wanted to see what it was like. He reported that it was amazing the types of people he met "under the bridge." He described them as "bums, derelicts, and PhDs."
Whatever was amiss was out of kilter due to uncontrollable events, mental problems, physical illnesses, or just rotten bad luck. People do bring things on themselves, but there is always a reason for that. All that you and I can do is to try to help guide such people out of their problems. Sometimes we can do so, and sometimes not.
Gus :-)))
Once again American Romance is a cold mouth-piece for the rich. NEVER that I can see does he have any humanity and now the man outright lies. Well - it's either that or American Romance knows nothing about what he speaks. His really concern is protecting those in power and money. His rap never changes and I would bet he gets paid for his lack of knowledge. He certainly has a "passion" for mis-direction. It's just a theory I have. Nobody hates like he does!
I will not walk by the homeless! I may not have money myself "that day", or that time - but that fool American Romance knows next to nothing!!!
I am a Vietnam Veteran and there but for the grace of God I go!
Hey American Fool Romance - YOU ARE A FOOL!
You know nothing and you're SATAN'S TOOL!

In America if you are homeless you are a druggie, a drunk, a crackhead, or something else! We have tons of places for homeless to go spend the night and get a meal and few of them use the facilities even during winter, There is no reason to be homeless in a country like America unless you have royaly screwed up your life and that would be what we conservatives call CHOICE! Therefore I am not responsible for you!
